Designing Effective Self-Instructional Material (SIM)

Key question: Do your materials accompany your teaching, or can they teach in your absence?

Begin With the End in Mind

Content on its own is not a SIM. A PDF of readings is content; a SIM has the tutorial voice built in.

An effective SIM anticipates the learner’s questions and difficulties. It explains, checks understanding, and gives feedback as the learner progresses. In other words, the instructional interaction that would normally come from a teacher is deliberately designed into the material itself.

Build upwards: design a solid Nano-SIM first, then combine them into Micro-SIM and Macro-SIM.

Learning outcomes

  • Distinguish content from genuinely self-instructional material using the five 'self-' tests.
  • Apply the five design non-negotiables namely outcomes, tutorial voice, active responding, feedback, self-pacing 
  • Scope and build a Nano-SIM with the Hook → Teach → Try → Check structure and the 7-step recipe.
  • Assemble Nano-SIMs into a Micro-SIM unit, and plan the route towards a Macro-SIM course.
  • Leave with a one-semester action plan naming exactly what you will build.
